In case you missed it last night BET premiered at documentary entitled My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About A Women In Hip-Hop a documentary displaying the past, present and future of female rappers. Regardless of what I personally feel about BET I love their documentaries (or maybe just like documentaries) and this pieces was especially well put together. It included everyone from Roxanne Chante a rap legend to underground MCees like Jean Grae and Tyie Phoenix.
What I am really please about is how the documentary spoke truth into the lack of mainstream female presence in the rap industry. Including the emlimination of the female rap categories from the Grammy roster, I didn’t think they would go that far but I am glad they did.
They covered a lot of bases with the piece and I will be buying DVD. On twitter last night Nicki Minaj got a lot of fanfair because a good deal of people felt that they down played her importance on the mainstream scene. I feel like this, Nicki and Trina are the only female Mcees in the game signed right now. But if you look at what the documentary is speaking about, Nicki is the culmination of the A + B = $$$ that was spoken about at the end of part 1. I’m not saying I don’t like Nicki, I’m just saying if you put her in a room with any other female rapper in that documentary, they’d lyrically devourer her! All in all I really got into this piece.
